Where to Buy Knives in Sakai, and What a Sakai Knife Costs

Where to buy knives in Sakai: the museum shop, maker shops, Namba, prices from ¥5,280, the new tax-free refund. Guided shopping from $60 as of October 2026.

Updated October 2026

The easiest place to buy a knife in Sakai is the TAKUMI SHOP on the ground floor of the Sakai Traditional Crafts Museum, where the city’s knife firms take turns at the counter and the museum’s online prices start at ¥5,280. For a maker’s own shop, Jikko, Yamawaki Hamono and the De Sakai forge are a few tram stops apart in Sakai-ku. Namba’s Doguyasuji kitchen street in central Osaka sells Sakai knives too.

Hours are as Sakai’s tourism bureau lists them; several makers also close on irregular days, so contact one before a special trip. Some Sakai shops will carve your name into a knife you buy; Jikko offers name engraving along with custom handles and sheaths.

Sakai, Namba, Tokyo or Kyoto?

If Sakai is out of reach, go to Sakai Ichimonji Mitsuhide on Doguyasuji in Namba, 3 minutes from Nankai Namba Station. It carries more than 2,000 types of Japanese knives, especially Sakai-made ones, opens every day except 1 and 2 January, and has staff for English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean and Thai depending on the shift. Jikko also has shops in Namba and at LINKS Umeda.

Is it better to buy knives in Tokyo or Kyoto? For Sakai knives, neither has a clear edge: Jikko, a Sakai maker, has a shop on Tokyo’s Kappabashi and three in Kyoto, the newest in Arashiyama from January 2026. Buy where you have time. For many Sakai makers side by side, though, the Sakai museum shop or Doguyasuji is the place. Which town’s knives to buy is a separate question, answered in Sakai vs Seki knives.

How much does a Sakai knife cost?

The museum’s own shop is a fair price guide, because it stocks many makers side by side. Its online prices in October 2026, tax included:

KnifeMakerPrice
Petty knife, 120 mm (Kikutora)Murata Hamono¥5,280
Santoku, 165 mm (Sakai Tohji)Izumi Riki Seisakusho¥11,330
Deba, 150 mm, kasumi finish (Sakai Shigehiro)Kasahara Hamono¥18,000
Deba, 150 mm, white steel No. 2 (Shotaro)Nomura Hamono¥24,000
Sashimi knife, 240 mm, white steel (Shotaro)Nomura Hamono¥28,000
Wa-santoku, 180 mm, black finishAoki Hamono¥46,200
Kiritsuke bunka, 165 mm, Damascus, snakewood handleA Sakai maker¥120,000

So how much should a good Japanese knife cost? A sound first Sakai knife for home cooking, such as a santoku from a named maker, starts at about ¥11,000 here. Single-bevel fish knives in white steel run about ¥18,000 to ¥28,000, and the Damascus showpiece is ¥120,000. The online shop ships only within Japan, so visitors buy at the counter.

Is it cheaper to buy Japanese knives in Japan? You pay the Japanese shelf price, and a visitor spending ¥5,000 or more at a registered shop ends up not paying the consumption tax. Whether that beats your home price depends on the knife and your local shop, so look the model up before you fly.

Tax-free from 1 November 2026

Until 31 October 2026, registered tax-free shops take the tax off at the till. For purchases from 1 November 2026, Japan switches to a refund:

  • You pay the full price, tax included, and show your passport.
  • When you leave Japan, customs at the airport or seaport inspects the goods, and the tax is refunded after that check.
  • The total must be ¥5,000 or more before tax, at one shop on one day, and the goods must leave Japan within 90 days of purchase.
  • Shipping a knife home does not count; separately shipped goods stopped qualifying on 1 April 2025.

Not every shop is registered, so look for the tax-free sign or ask. The crafts museum’s pages do not say whether its shop is registered; the Sakai knife museum guide has the rest of what it offers.

Carrying it home

Japan’s Swords and Firearms Control Law bans carrying a blade longer than 6 cm without a work or other justifiable reason, and Tokyo’s police give buying a knife at a shop and taking it home as their example of a justifiable reason. Self-defence is not one. Keep the knife in the shop’s box and wrapping, inside a bag, and go back to your hotel rather than sightseeing with it. Since 1 April 2019, JR and other railways have banned knives on trains unless they are packed so they cannot hurt anyone, and staff may check your bag.

Can I bring a Japanese knife in my checked luggage? Yes, and only there: knives never go in the cabin. Can I buy a knife in Japan and bring it back to the US? The TSA allows knives in checked bags, sheathed or securely wrapped. Your home country’s import rules are yours to check.

Shop alone, or with a guide?

Alone is fine at the museum shop, where staff speak English. A guide such as ENA’s private access tour earns its fee when you want to understand steel and blade shape before spending ¥30,000, or to see a maker’s showroom you would not find alone.
