How to Get to Sakai from Osaka, and Is Sakai Worth Visiting?
Sakai is 10 minutes from Namba by Nankai, about 30 from Umeda or Kansai Airport: stations, the tram, kofun and tea. Knife tours from $38 as of October 2026.
Sakai is about 10 minutes from Namba by train: the Nankai Main Line runs to Sakai Station, the stop for the old knife quarter and most tour meeting points, and the Nankai Koya Line reaches Sakaihigashi, by City Hall, in 12 to 15 minutes. From Kansai Airport, Nankai runs straight to Sakai Station in about half an hour. From Umeda, take the Midosuji subway to Namba and change. JR Pass holders ride the Hanwa Line from Tennoji.

Every way in
| From | Route | Get off at | Riding time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Namba | Nankai Main Line | Sakai | About 10 min | Old town, crafts museum, tour meeting points |
| Namba | Nankai Koya Line, express | Sakaihigashi | 12 to 15 min | ¥290; next to City Hall |
| Umeda | Midosuji subway, then Nankai Koya Line | Sakaihigashi | About 30 min | Change at Namba |
| Shin-Osaka | Midosuji subway, then Nankai Koya Line | Sakaihigashi | About 27 to 40 min | Change at Namba |
| Kansai Airport | Nankai Airport Line | Sakai | About 26 to 30 min | No change |
| Tennoji | JR Hanwa Line, rapid | Sakaishi, or Mozu with a change | 7 to 8 min; Mozu 4 min more | ¥240 to Mozu; JR Pass valid |
| Tennoji-ekimae | Hankai tram | Myokokuji-mae, Shinmeicho, Shukuin | Slower than the train | ¥240 flat fare |
Riding times leave out changes. The JR Pass covers the Hanwa Line but not Nankai or the tram. Trams from Tennoji-ekimae run through to Hamadera-ekimae past Sakai’s old-town stops; trams from Ebisucho, by Tsutenkaku, turn back at Abikomichi, so change there.
Which Sakai station for what

- Sakai Station (Nankai Main Line). Japan Tour Adventure’s walk meets at Nankai Sakai Station, and so do ENA’s handle-making workshop and private access tour; getting to the station is up to you. The crafts museum is about 15 minutes’ walk away.
- Myokokuji-mae, Shinmeicho and Ayanocho (Hankai tram). The old knife quarter. The crafts museum is 3 minutes from Myokokuji-mae, Jikko and the Sakai-Tohji Knife Museum are by Shinmeicho, and the De Sakai forge is by Ayanocho.
- Sakaihigashi (Nankai Koya Line). HopGo’s walk meets at the West Exit. Sakai City Hall, with its free 21st-floor observatory, is next door, and Daisen Park is 20 to 30 minutes on foot.
- Mozu (JR Hanwa Line). A short walk to Daisen Park and Sakai City Museum.
Is Sakai worth visiting?
Yes, if you care about knives, tea or Japan’s ancient tombs; less so for general sightseeing. Sakai’s forged knives, made mainly in Sakai and in Osaka City, have been a nationally designated traditional craft since 1982, and this is where you can watch the trade at work: the Friday sharpening demonstration at the crafts museum, a sharpening shop, a forge. Sakai City names its forged knives first among its traditional industries, ahead of dyed cotton and incense, and the crafts museum shows those and more: kelp, rugs, carp streamers and sweets. The grand tea master Sen no Rikyu was born here. Daisen Kofun, believed to be Emperor Nintoku’s tomb, is about 800 m long including its moats, and belongs to the Mozu-Furuichi group listed as a World Heritage Site in 2019.
The limits are worth knowing. The tombs cannot be entered: you walk the moat path, and the City Hall observatory gives the view from above. The knife quarter and the tombs sit in different parts of the city, so half a day covers one of them well. If you have only an hour for knives, Namba’s Doguyasuji kitchen street is closer; see where to buy knives in Sakai.
What is there to do in Sakai, Osaka?
| Place | What it is | Hours | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daisen Park and Daisen Kofun | The moat path round Japan’s largest tomb | Always open | Free |
| Sakai City Hall observatory | The tombs from the 21st floor | 9:00-21:00 | Free |
| Sakai City Museum | Sakai’s history and how the tombs were built | 9:30-17:15; closed Mondays | ¥200 |

| Shimano Bicycle Museum | Bicycles and Sakai’s manufacturing | 10:00-16:30; closed Mondays | ¥500 |
Several tours string these together. Osaka JOINER’s crafts, tea and incense day adds the Old Yamaguchi Residence, a merchant house built in 1615. HopGo’s walk takes in the Shimano museum and Risho no Mori. Yamaguchi Motors’ three-day trip from Tokyo walks the Daisen moat path, and Kansai Holiday’s private car day pairs Sakai with Sumiyoshi Taisha and Shinsekai.

Before you book
If you buy a knife, keep it in the shop’s box and wrapping, inside a bag: since 1 April 2019, JR and other railways have banned knives on trains unless they are packed so they cannot hurt anyone. The walk has free cancellation up to 24 hours before; compare it with the rest in every Sakai knife tour compared, and check opening days in the Sakai knife museum guide.
